A Slow Walk form Cervarezza to Ventasso Mount

In order to discover and to emphasize traditions and beauty of our land, during the “Giornata Verde” of Emilia Romagna, “Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori delle Colline di Scandiano e Canossa” organizes a slow walk in the National Park of Tuscan-Emilian Appennines.
At 9.00 am , from square Primo Maggio in
Cervarezza ( 869 m) , we will set off for Parco delle Fonti St. Lucia. Here, among 100 years old beech trees and natural mineral water springs, we will visit St. Lucia church and we will go across Cerwood Adventure-Park.

Going round Campestrino Mount, we will take the so called " Strada del Cavicchio ", which connects St Lucia Sources to the
Montemiscoso Mill, once fed by Lonza River and registered in the Hydrographic Map of Italy in 1888 .
After that we will set off for
Calamone Lake
, under Ventasso Mount. The lake, of glacial origin , is located at about 1400 m altitude. It is fed by three natural springs and it is the largest natural lake of Reggio Emilia. It is encircled by large forests of beech and conifers, in excellent conditions. Here we will have a picnic based on the gastronomic traditions. (If you prefer, it is also possible to have lunch in a restaurant).
We will take the forest path, to reach
Ventasso Laghi, where we will admire the valley of Secchia River. Then we will reach the Oratory of St. Maria Maddalena
(1505 m). The oratory was an ancient medieval nunnery, restored and rebuilt several times , the last one after the destruction committed by Germans in 1944, to eliminate a strategic retreat to partisan . The oratory is still the destination of a traditional pilgrimage at the end of July, because the cult of St. Maria Maddalena is still alive. It is said the imprint of the back of the Saint is still engraved on a boulder outside the building.
From here we retrace the stony and we will come back in Cervarezza, going across meadows, natural springs, valleys and beech.
